Matthew Smith

Matthew Read Smith was born in Kansas City, Missouri in 1960. While living in Europe during his youth, he was exposed to the work of the great masters, which fostered his interest in art. Smith graduated from Arizona State University in 1985 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting. During school he spent a great deal of time traveling and studying with many of today's foremost representational artists. Still living in Arizona today, Smith works primarily on location and feels his best works come directly from life. Widely exhibited, Smith's work has been featured in many national shows and is found in numerous private collections. He is a member of Plein Air Painters of America. Last year, Smith received the Robert Lougheed Award at the Prix de West Invitational, Oklahoma City, OK and the Ben Stahl Merit Award at the Northwest Rendezvous Group. He has exhibited in such museums as the Albuquerque Museum of Art, Albuquerque, NM; the Gilcrease Museum, Tulsa, OK; the National Wildlife Art Museum in Jackson, WY.
