Steve Kestrel grew up in southern New Mexico where he and his family raised and trained quarter horses. Kestrel now resides with his wife, Cindi, on a 43 acre "wildlife preserve" in Colorado's Redstone Canyon.
Steve won the "Prix de West Purchase Award" in 2013 at the Prix de West Invitational, NCWHM, Oklahoma City, OK
"Gold Medal Sculpture" at the "West Select" - Phoenix Art Museum in 2011, 2012 & 2013;
"Museum Purchase Award" (2013) - Briscoe Western Art Museum, San Antonio, TX;
"People's Choice Award" (2007) at the National Museum of Wildlife Art/ Visions West Show and the "Red Smith Award" (2008);
"Best of Show" (2005 and 2008) and featured artist at the Coors Western Art Show in Denver, Colorado.
Kestrel's work is in the permanent collections of eleven museums, including the national Museum of Wildlife Art (15 works), Denver Art Museum, Gilcrease Museum, Buffalo Bill Center of the West, Eiteljorg Museum, Witchita Art Museum, Woodson Art Museum, Brookgreen Gardens, Leanin' Tree Museum, Briscoe Western Art Museum and Booth Western Art Museum.
